Sacred Ground, a Film Series
We invite you to a year-long film-based dialogue series on race called Sacred Ground. This series is designed for our times and is an attempt to respond to the profound challenges of our current times surrounding race and racism, and hopes to foster the difficult but respectful and transformative dialogue we need to have with each other about them. We will walk back in history to peel away the layers that have brought us to today, and shaped our collective story. The series, which will occur monthly, are built around powerful documentary films and readings which we hope will serve as a jumping off point for discussion. We will focus on race in general, as it coincides with immigration issues, whiteness, black, and indigenous peoples as well as others. On the fourth Wednesday of the Month, we will gather in Pilgrim Hall for a light supper, film, and discussion. Families are welcome and childcare will be available with pre-registration.
Congratulations to the DuPage County ACT-SO Local Gold Medalists
Fourteen high school students from DuPage County were awarded gold medals in STEM and Humanities categories at the local competition in March. They will all advance to the national competition at the NAACP convention in Chicago, July 18-22. ACT-SO is an acronym for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, which is a cornerstone of the youth division of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). There are 33 competition categories under the broad headings of STEM, Business, Culinary, Humanities, Performing Arts and Visual Arts. As part of our Royalties for Spirituals racial justice initiative, FCCGE has supported DuPage County ACT-SO with our twice-a-year offerings, totalling over $2,000. Ten volunteers from FCCGE participated as judges in various categories, and they are always looking for more volunteers for their mentoring program that starts up soon for the next school year.
